Juried Fine Art Show at Hibiscus Festival ….A Huge Hit
The Hibiscus Festival, held Saturday, April 17 in downtown Vero Beach, moved the Art Show’s site to a new location within the Festival and delivered a huge success for the participating arts and the community visiting the show. The move resulted in over 30 artists setting up booths and over 15,000 people attending the day long Festival. The event included other booths of arts and crafts, jewelry and flowers and plants as well as children’s activities, live day-long entertainment, a 5K Run, Fashion Show, exhibits, shopping cart parade, a Beatles Tribute Band and more.
A space was provided for Fine Art & Fine Craft artists to set up their displays and artists were encouraged to display original artwork and offerings of the artist’s prints, note cards, postcards & small gift items. Lee Orre was the Chairman and Mary Segal was the official judge.
Judge Mary Segal chose the winning artists by reviewing their complete body of work rather than choosing individual works of art for the awards. The decision was difficult, as the over-all quality of the fine art show was high, and several artists were being considered.
First place winner of $300 was Scott Murray with his unique block prints, Al Gustave had fine wood turned bowls and vases and won $200 for second place and Patrice Scott’s fine art won her $100.
The 2011 Hibiscus Festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 16. For information pertaining to the Juried Fine Art Show, contact Lee Orre at 772-538-0959

Shopping Cart Parade and Canned Good Drive
Bring A Non-Perishable Food Item to the Festival
The services rendered by the Harvest Food & Outreach Center, located in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce, have never been more important. They offer food, clothing, crisis care, and educational opportunities to those in economic need. Families are struggling to keep food on the table and to keep a roof over their
heads during this challenging time.
Keeping that in mind, Treasure and Space Coast Radio, with stations 93.7 The Breeze, 99.7 Jack fm, 97.1 Ocean fm, and Newsradio 1490 WTTB, have stepped up to plate to put a “spin” on the typical food drive by creating a benefit for the Harvest Food & Outreach Center, “Providing Food & Hope on the Treasure Coast.”
The radio stations have combined a food drive with a shopping cart parade to make it a full, upbeat experience for both the donor and the recipient. They had selected high traffic locations for residents to bring in their non-perishable foods to fill the carts prior to the Festival. The shopping carts will be decorated by sponsors and they will all be in front of the Courthouse Executive Center at the Hibiscus Festival on Saturday.
Attendees of the Hibiscus Festival are invited to bring canned goods and other non-perishables to the event to add to the other shopping carts on display from 9 a.m. to 2:00 pm. At 3 p.m., sponsors will push their shopping carts in a parade through the festival before exiting downtown to their final destination at the Outreach Center for distribution to the needy. The sponsor with the most food donated and the best decorated shopping cart will win prizes from the radio station.

Running at the head of the pack is Mark Ashdown of the annual 5K Run. The race beings at 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 17 at the Vero Beach Municipal Airport and leads runners through the streets of historic Downtown Vero Beach.
The public is invited to join runners immediately following the race for the Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast, chaired by Bill Fish. The delicious breakfast, which costs only $5 for adults and $2.00 for kids, will be served on the south lawn of the Heritage Center from 7:30 – 10:00 a.m. A yummy pancake topping buffet table will be available for an additional $1.00 per person
Susan Viviano chairs the Hibiscus Marketplace along with Lesa Talbott which features merchandise vendors, community and non-profit booths. They will be bustling from 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 in historic downtown Vero Beach all along 14th Avenue and 21st Streets.
Susan Viviano and Lisa Talbott team again as the schedulers for the children’s activities. Plans are in the works for a magician extraordinaire, teen bands, bounce-houses, a face-painter, and more throughout the day on the south lawn of the Heritage Center.
The entertainment is bountiful this year thanks to coordinator Marty Paris and sponsor Marine Bank who have arranged to have street musicians and bands throughout the festival hours and continuing into the after party until 8:30 p.m. Andy Lawrence and Daniel Fourmont are coordinating the Salute to Youth performances by the Rotary Club that begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Community Center.
Darlene Forage is coordinating with Dillard’s Department Store to present the 2nd Annual Hibiscus Festival Spring Fashion Show inside the Heritage Center at 11:30 a.m.. Models representing fifteen different local non-profit organizations will be featured in the show.
And you won’t want to miss a very special 1960’s Hibiscus Festival Party from 5:30-8:30 p.m., underwritten by Bill Bryant and Associates and chaired by Marine Bank’s Georgia Irish. Beatles Remembered, a fabulous Beatles Tribute and British Invasion Band will take you back to the era of love beads and flowers once again this year. Thanks to Cathie Callery and her beer posse, the street party’s beer covered will be a busy spot.
The Farmers Market returns bigger and better then ever before, thanks to Hale Groves and Retail Manager Kristin DiPentima. Visit their huge store under the tents in the Vero Beach Community Center’s parking lot. You will discover some of the best and juiciest fruit, veggies and other specialty items all in one location for your shopping convenience.
Antique Autos will abound thanks to Lee Orr. Look for them again in the parking lot next to the Hibiscus Building on 14th.

Save the Date for the Bill Bryant & Associates 60’s Hibiscus Festival Street Party

The 2010 Hibiscus Festival, presented by The City of Vero Beach to benefit Main Street Vero Beach and Vero Heritage Inc will culminate with an extra special street party Saturday, April 17 from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bill Bryant and Associates is the sponsoring the entertainment which features an amazing Beatles Tribute Band!
When the daytime festival ends at 5:00 p.m. the 60’s party will be nearly ready to begin. Bobby & the Blisters, sponsored by Marine Bank, will be the warm-up band playing from 4:00-5:30 p.m. from the center of 21st Street and 14th Avenue. Beer will be on sale and plenty of room for dancing. The Blisters, known for their “New Orleans” party music, brings a solid combination of R&B, Jazz and Creole/Zydeco, ideal for ending the festival’s day-long festivities and preparing for the night time 60’s/Beatles music. The standouts of Bobby and the Blisters are no doubt Bobby Gangloff himself, lead singer and piano player and Ron McCode on saxophone…my oh my!
The 60’s Hibiscus Festival Street Party, decorated to celebrate the era of flower power, is designed as an extension of the day-long street festival, just one block south in the familiar Downtown Friday block on 14th Avenue. Come dressed to the theme, let your hair down and have a ball! In addition to food and your favorite beverages, Beatles memorabilia and all types of 60’s paraphernalia, you will be transported on a walk down memory lane! A wide variety of food and a fully stocked Beer Garden will be offered and decorated tables will abound throughout the block for comfort of eating and drinking.
The party block will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until 3 p.m, unless you are shopping at any of the shops or restaurants in that location. Beginning at 5 p.m. entry into the street party will be from one gate on the south end of the party block or two gates on the north end of the party block. The planning committee is asking for a small admission of $2 for a wristband which will help defray many costs associated with bringing this amazing event to the Indian River County community.
The crowning glory for the evening will be “Beatles Remembered,” a 1960’s Beatles Tribute and British Invasion Band that will return again this year from 5:30-8:30 p.m. “Beatles Remembered” was an instant hit when they performed at last year’s Hibiscus Festival Street Party, playing hits from the Beatles and other well known “British Invasion” bands.
The 60’s Hibiscus Festival Street Party, chaired by Marine Bank’s Georgia Irish, will be an evening of non-stop dancing, singing, 60’s attire and more!
During the band breaks, the festival will be pleased to introduce Austin McLaughlin all the way from Nashville, TN. Austin is a 17 year old self taught singer/songwriter who was raised in Vero
Beach, attended St. Edwards lower and middle schools before transferring to Vero Beach High School. Her repertoire includes many of her original works along with some popular cover songs in County Music.
